Karen McCormick, of Longmont, CO, will be running for Congress and will be running on the Democratic ticket for the 4thcongressional district.
Ken Buck, Republican, will be running as incumbent. McCormick will be running against Chase Kohne in the Democratic primary race.
McCormick was in Lamar on Friday, August 4 for the Town Hall meeting with Ken Buck and she stayed after the meeting to answer questions with citizens.
She has been a resident of Longmont for over 22 years and ran and operated her own veterinarian practice for over 30 years.
“I grew up in a Navy family,” commented the candidate. She said her father instilled in her “what it means to be an American.”
“We can all agree on an honorable government,” said McCormick. She further commented that Americans can all agree on leaders that “have integrity.”
She said that one thing she said she sees is “not enough respect for each other,” that people need to stop “demonizing each other.”
McCormick noted it is important for her to work with others to find common ground and to find solutions to problems. The veterinarian said she is a critical thinker and problem solver, which is something she believes will assist her in solving problems for citizens in her district, if elected to Congress.
“We have to stand up to those we elect, whatever side we’re on,” said the candidate. McCormick said she grew up Republican but has switched to the Democratic party. She said she agrees with her current party on how they view social issues. She said that over years, the change in rhetoric and stance on issues with the Republican party played a role in her switching parties.
She further noted she votes based on policy and the person running and doesn’t vote simply based on a political party.
“I’m actually a very independent thinker; Republicans have good ideas, Democrats have good ideas,” noted McCormick.
McCormick said that as a problem solver, it’s important to get everyone at the table with differing viewpoints and discuss it in a civil way.
